Since 1989 when he was called to the Ontario Bar, Doug MacLeod, Managing Partner of the MacLeod Law Firm, has been practicing exclusively in the area of employment, labour and human rights law.
Doug has been providing employment law advice and representation to owner operators for over 30 years. He helps owners understand their obligations to employees when the sale of the business takes place. He suggests ways to maximize the goodwill that is associated with these employees and to minimize any termination costs that the owner may have to assume at or after closing in relation to these employees.
He has taught a number of courses at George Brown College including employment law, labour relations and human rights law, and the Law Society of Upper Canada has certified him to provide Continuing Legal Education programs to other lawyers on various employment law issues.
Doug has obtained a certificate from the University of Windsor, Faculty of Law, for successfully completing the Advanced ADR Program, and he mediates employment disputes on a part-time basis.
Doug often writes and speaks on employment law issues on topics as diverse as: terminating employees for social media postings, the implications of the sharing economy on Ontario’s labour laws, and an employer’s obligations under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
In 2018, Doug received the Award for Excellence in Labour and Employment Law from his peers in the Labour & Employment Law section of the Ontario Bar Association.
In addition to providing legal advice, Doug is a trusted advisor to his clients. In this regard, he graduated from Western University’s Ivy School of Business, runs his own business and he understands the non-legal aspects of operating a business.
